This is an interesting graph...
(Some of you have seen this before in earlier emails, but I thought I would share it with everyone.)
On the x-axis is "mean [total] cholesterol" level (from BHF-Heartstats). On the y-axis is "all cause mortality" (from the World Health Organization (WHO)).
The heavy solid blue curve represents mortality from all causes. The dotted red curve represents mortality from only cardiovascular disease (CD).
From an all cause mortality (death) standpoint, the lowest mortality level occurs at a cholesterol level of about 222. Looking only at CD (dotted red curve), the lowest mortaility level occurs when cholesterol level is around 208.
Both of these values for cholesterol would be seen as too high by your conventional wisdom physician, and they would argue that your cholesterol should be lower. But as can be seen on the graph, a lower cholesterol level shows an increase death rate.
